‘you make me love you baby, with a little L’

Modest and humble are the first words that came to mind when I first held a pack of leafie papers (the L is indeed a lower-case!).  At first glance, these papers are rather unassuming. I like that, it’s a nice touch in a world that can feel overly vibrant, and every product tries to jump out at you. It gives the impression of being quietly confident, knowing it deserves it’s place, wherever that may be for you.

I feel the need to acknowledge my ignorance.  ‘Organic Vegan Rolling Papers’ generally isn’t a term I’m used to. But I’m now understanding the ‘vegan’ part of the statement is in relation to the gum on these papers. Although I’m not a vegan, I do appreciate the lengths that leafie have gone to in order to accommodate this growing need.

To begin with, I thought I’d perform the ‘burn’ test. This test is simple-stand the paper upright, see how long it takes to burn into nothing. We’re testing for a few things here; 1-How slowly or quickly the paper burns down. I prefer slowly, it gives the best chance of an even burn, and allows your roll-up of choice to sit while you do other things, without wasting away. 2- How evenly the paper burns away. Self-explanatory really. 3- Colour of ash and how much is left after burning. The less the better in amount. The colour is irrelevant, but I like to see.

The burn test is easily my favourite test. It takes just a few seconds to perform, looks cool, and gives you an idea of how the paper will burn once rolled. The results are as follows: Burn time- 10 seconds. Nice and slow, that’s some beautiful looking timing. I did notice the burn wasn’t entirely even the whole way down, and this could well be to do with the gum, but it could also just be the method of manufacture. What did impress me, was the amount of ash that was left. There was hardly any! That tells me these papers are nice and clean, without any nasty additives. The slow burn is a natural occurrence, and not created using chemicals. After conducting this test, I rolled one up and gave it a try. In order for me to be able to offer a proper review, I repeated this process 5 times. In the name of science and a fair trial, of course. Every single roll burned perfectly and evenly, despite the burn test. This just goes to show, a test is a test, but in practice is a different beast entirely.

Every paper comes out the same, with quality control clearly being a priority to manufacturer. This is exemplary in the rolling paper industry, as a lot of the larger companies tend to let things slide more easily (looking at you Snoop Dogg papers. Shame on you.)

I’ll hold my hands up to this immediately. I am not usually a fan of unbleached papers, nor hemp as I find the longer fibers tend to hold oils and residue more thickly than say standard rice papers.  That isn’t the case here. Although the roaches are thick fibered, they don’t collect any more oil than your standard blue Rizla papers, or Classic RAW’s. When rolling, the paper glides between your fingers easily, meaning every time I skin up, the paper follows my lead.

The roaches have 3 small sets of perforations to give you a nice little blocker running through your newly rolled leaf-of-love, so no little bits drop into your mouth. A clever thing they did here was making the end fold slightly slimmer than the other two, allowing maximum airflow without squaring itself.

Overall I find leafie to be fantastic papers. I’m still not convinced to permanently move over from the ones I currently use, as I do find using thicker fibered roaches encourage me to roll thicker stogies, but that’s personal preference.

I really like the humility of the packaging, and the branding overall, although with it being so modest, I wonder if they may get overlooked on shelves of lots of bright packaging. I also love the fact they as a company are confident in their brand and don’t feel the need to have loud, trashy stickers or banners all over their product. I also think this uniqueness gives them a solid place on the market. The price is right in line with other, similar or familiar brands, so they don’t feel exuberant or luxury, but rather that they can fit in with your everyday.
